This application is an extension of a project I created during my internship with the Iowa Department of Transportation over the summer of 2014, which involved working
with our 511 program to convert our xml data feed into a GIS REST Service. This got me interested in pulling data from the states surrounding Iowa, to visualize the potential impact
and response to major regional incidents (such as major flooding or winter storms). The goal of this project is to get authoritative traffic data from all 50 US states into the hands of emergency
management officials and others who want a one-stop-shop when it comes to planning a multi-state response or trip.
Emergency Management/Traffic Operations Officials:
There are many major datasets out there such as HERE, Inrix, Total Traffic Network,
Waze, Beat the Traffic, etc. But the problem I have noticed with them is that they don't provide all events in a
timely manner. My TARDIS 511 is meant to resolve that issue by providing data for officials from authoritative data sources that are constantly updated, with some sources updated as often as every 10 minutes.
Future Goals:
While working on the project, I came across the Open511 Project, which is a great way to push out data, that I encourage all agencies to use when pushing out their data,
to provide a standardized way of displaying data. I plan on attempting to implement this in the future.
